Retrospective certification

Responsible for an old installation?
Unsure what legislation applies?
Looking for professional, unbiased advice?

Wessex Gate Safety can assist in bringing your current automated gate system up to current standards.

If your automation system is not CE marked and you are not in possession of a certificate of conformity then it is highly likely that your installation is not compliant to current safety standards.

All installations since 2008 should comply with The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (SMSR). Systems installed prior to this date are not excluded and the following legislation applies:

  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Occupiers Liability Act 1957 & 1984

Whilst you may have been advised that the only option is to replace the automation equipment with the latest CE marked equivalents, this is not necessarily true.

It is perfectly acceptable to either carry out a retrospective assessment under The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 or complete an assessment under The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

It is unlikely that the system will be compliant in its current state, but the installation of additional security devices or a change in mode of operation could render the system compliant.

If you are unsure of the status of your installation, we would advise you to isolate the system and seek advice from a competent person who is familiar will all aspects of legislation relating to gate automation systems.
